The year is 1941, and PRIVATE MONTGOMERY WARD reports to the CAPTAIN for duty in Hawaii.

CAPTAIN
If you don’t join the regimental boxing club, I’ll make your life hell.

PRIVATE MONTGOMERY WARD
Bring it on! Not only am I the best bugler on base, but I’m also the most stubborn!

PRIVATE MONTGOMERY WARD’s best friend PRIVATE FRANK SINATRA throws an arm around him and thrusts a fifth of whiskey in his hands.

PRIVATE FRANK SINATRA
(slurring)
Screw him! Come on, good buddy! I’m going AWOL on guard tonight, so let’s go into town and find us a couple of night club “hostesses” who will show a guy a good time!

“Hostess” DONNA REED links arms with PRIVATE MONTGOMERY WARD.

DONNA REED
Well, hi there, soldier.

PRIVATE MONTGOMERY WARD
I’m obsessed with you.

DONNA REED
Well, then by all means, take this key to my apartment.

Meanwhile, on a seemingly unrelated note, FIRST SARGEANT BURT LANCASTER is making movie history by feeling up the CAPTAIN’s wife, DEBORAH KERR, on the beach.

DEBORAH KERR
Oh, take me away from all this! Become an officer!

FIRST SARGEANT BURT LANCASTER
I don’t wanna.

DEBORAH KERR
Then goodbye forever!

Back at the nightclub, PRIVATE FRANK SINATRA bugs bigoted SARGEANT ERNEST BORGNINE, who ends up beating him to death when PRIVATE FRANK SINATRA gets thrown in the stockade.

PRIVATE MONTGOMERY WARD
(on his bugle)

PRIVATE MONTGOMERY WARD kills SARGEANT ERNEST BORGNINE and hides out at DONNA REED’s apartment. The JAPANESE choose that moment to bomb Pearl Harbor, and when PRIVATE MONTGOMERY WARD tries to go back, he’s shot dead by a SENTRY. DEBORAH KERR and DONNA REED get on a boat to go back to the mainland.
